In Netherlands, 80 per cent of the listed toilets are free; 88 out of 437 charge. The paid ones tend to sit where crowds pass through: stations, shopping centres, motorway services. A few coins in your pocket will not hurt, but you will usually not need them.

The 437 toilets in Netherlands are spread across 5 cities. Amsterdam leads with 180, followed by The Hague with 89. That is a more even spread than in many other countries.

Step-free access and changing tables

26 per cent of entries in Netherlands are recorded as step-free. A baby changing table is noted on 40 entries (9 per cent); with small children it is worth checking the features before you set off.

Where these numbers come from

Most entries for Netherlands come from OpenStreetMap, the open map volunteers have been building since 2004. On top of that sit places users added in the app themselves, with ratings and photos. The two sources are kept apart so a mistake in one never overwrites the other. An entry reported as gone is hidden rather than deleted — so it can come back if the toilet reopens.
